The 2,000 seats in Perfecting Church on Detroit’s east side weren’t enough to hold all of the people who came to celebrate Pop Winans’ life. The home-going celebration was a blend of great gospel singing and preaching, fond remembrances and humorous stories about the man many knew as Pop, a gospel singer himself and the father of 10 children.

Award-winning Gospel music artist CeCe Winans will be among the newest inductees to the Music City Walk of Fame and be recognized officially during an induction ceremony this Sunday. CeCe will join Cowboy Jack Clement, Mike Curb, Marty Stuart and Josh Turner for the unveiling of commemorative sidewalk markers Sunday afternoon in the Hall of Fame Park in downtown Nashville. Also recognized will be Dr. Richard H. Boyd, whose publishing company has influenced Christian music even decades after his death in 1922.

BattleCry was orchestrated by Teen Mania Ministries, a youth ministry founded in 1986 by Ron Luce, BattleCry events are an unorthodox form of religious outreach. Sirdeaner Walker, 44, is ferociously protective of her four children. So when her 11-year-old son Carl Joseph Walker-Hoover complained to her last September of being bullied by students at the New Leadership Charter School in Springfield, Massachusetts, for “acting gay,” she did something about it. She spoke to his principal, teachers and guidance counselor and became more active in the Parent Teachers Organization. But the teasing and threats continued and Carl started acting out in school, becoming increasingly fearful and felt even more alienated.

On Monday, April 6, everyone learned just how serious the situation had become. Walker found her little boy with an extension cord wrapped around his neck, hanging from the third floor rafter of their home. Peter J. Daboul, chairman of the Board for New Leadership Charter School, released a statement shortly after Carl’s death saying, “I plan to initiate an investigation into the facts and the allegations to ensure that the school responded in an appropriate manner.” School officials did not respond to our calls for comment, but the school has sponsored a carnation drive and a walk in Carl’s honor.

Pop Winans will be laid to rest in a home-going celebration today. Today’s service follows an appropriately music-filled tribute to his life at a memorial service Tuesday evening at Detroit’s Perfecting Church, pastored by his son the Rev. Marvin Winans.
