I want to bring awareness to the No. 3 leading cause of death and a leading cause of long-term disability among Black Americans. Black Americans have almost twice the risk of first-ever strokes compared with whites, and blacks 35-54 years old have four times the relative risk for stroke.

Luther Vandross, the greatest male vocalist in our lifetime, was silence by complications of a stroke. In 1985, my grandmother lost her life to stroke complications. One of my biggest fears is to also falling victim to a stroke, that’s why today I join with the American Heart Association and the Power To End Stroke campaign in saying, “the power is in your hands to prevent and overcome stroke”.

Fortunately stroke is often preventable, and the American Heart Association/American Stroke Association’s Power To The End Stroke  movement is empowering Black Americans to reduce their risk by making healthy lifestyle changes. Please go the Power To End Stroke website and sign up, they need your help to bring awareness to the Black community about stroke.

Be real. Be strong. Be proud. Be EMPowered.
